Finding new purpose for vacancies in rural areas: a taxonomy of coworking space business models

Abstract As a result of the rural exodus over last decades, unused vacancies in areas are at risk falling into disrepair. Given current trends flexible workplaces and people returning to areas, their repurposing as coworking spaces (CWSs) by entrepreneurs poses potential for sustainable future-oriented workplace solutions. However, there is little no guidance on structural configuration business models CWSs available these entrepreneurs. We apply structured empirical research approach create comprehensive specialized taxonomy, including literature review eleven interviews with operators Germany. The resulting taxonomy based an extension model canvas contributes knowledge base CWSs. evaluate its usability through case study entrepreneurial operator CWS, underlining practice-oriented purpose. addresses several urgent topics, such future work new (places), which enable accelerate development outside agglomerations consequential COVID-19 pandemic.
